About the Job
Elsevier is inviting applications for the position of Associate Counsel to support its business operations through contract drafting and review, legal risk assessment, and compliance with applicable laws and internal policies. The role also involves contributing to departmental initiatives relating to contracts, training, and process improvement.
Areas of Work / Key Responsibilities
The Associate Counsel will be responsible for:
- Drafting and reviewing service contracts, work orders, and statements of work
- Ensuring contractual compliance with applicable laws and Elsevier or RELX internal policies
- Identifying, assessing, and escalating high-risk legal issues
- Drafting contracts using standard templates with appropriate legal clauses
- Proofreading and reviewing legal documents for accuracy, consistency, formatting, and compliance
- Updating and maintaining contract templates
- Summarizing legal documents and legal principles for internal stakeholders
- Supporting contract-related projects, including training, automation, and process improvements
- Working closely with senior legal team members and cross-functional departments
- Maintaining strict confidentiality and professional discretion
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants should meet the following requirements:
- LL.B. degree from a recognized university
- Prior experience in a law firm or in-house legal team
- Strong understanding of Intellectual Property Rights and copyright law
- Experience in drafting, reviewing, and negotiating contracts
- Basic knowledge of the publishing industry
- Strong legal writing, communication, and report-drafting skills
- Project management and organizational skills
- Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
- Ability to work under tight timelines with effective prioritization
- Experience with legal software or systems will be an added advantage
