Prominent sportsman Kapil Dev believes that eliminating duties on sports equipment would assist the country in producing more champions since more youngsters will be able to buy the goods and participate in sports as a result of the removal of duties.
Aditi Ashok, an Indian golfer who finished fourth in the Olympics but lost out on a medal, recently expressed frustration at not being able to take advantage of the government’s TOP program because she qualified for the Tokyo Games just 60 days before the main event.
The 62-year-old former India captain and one of the board members of the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) were asked about how the government can assist golfers. He replied that “removing the duty on sports goods is the most important thing you require in any sport, whether it be badminton, table tennis, or golf.”
“The kids that want to get into that (sport)…there are a plethora of items (to purchase), such as spikes, shoes, and so on.” In spite of the fact that collecting tax on sports products does not generate much revenue for the nation, Kapil believes that if the practice is discontinued, it would have a significant effect on the sport.
Infrastructure, according to the World Cup-winning captain, is another key area in which the government can assist the country.
“Infrastructure is the most essential item in which the government can assist; the rest is provided by the private sector. We do not anticipate having to turn to the government for every issue. We, like our organization, should strive to be self-sufficient (PGTI).
“We will strive to make it worthwhile for the kids to come and play, and who knows, we may even win a medal like Neeraj (Chopra). No one had anticipated such a result. When one javelin costs a lakh, “how many young children can afford to pay that much?” he wondered.
“The only thing we can ask of the government is that they refrain from imposing any taxes on sports goods such as shoes,” he said.
