Legal Research Job Opportunity (Project-based Research Position)
About the Project
NLSIU is undertaking empirical research projects focused on the Indian criminal justice system. These projects analyse public legal data to study judicial decision-making processes, including sentencing patterns, bail decisions, undertrial incarceration, and regional and social disparities. The research also involves developing publicly accessible legal datasets using tools such as natural language processing to enable broader legal and policy research.
Eligibility Criteria
- LL.B. degree or Master’s degree in an allied discipline
- Demonstrated training and experience in coding and analysing large government datasets
- 0–5 years of work experience in an academic or professional setting with proven research and writing ability
Desirable:
- Prior experience in empirical legal research
- Experience with coding or statistical analysis
- Relevant research background in criminal justice or public law
Areas of Work / Key Responsibilities
- Navigating the eCourts platform to identify and document structural aspects of the Indian legal system
- Hand-coding cases to build robust training datasets
- Analysing judicial decisions and extracting empirical data
- Assisting in the development of legal databases and open data portals
- Researching judicial performance indicators such as sentencing and bail outcomes
- Preparing research reports, documentation, and presentations
- Collaborating with faculty leads and participating in regular project meetings
- Assisting with academic writing, papers, and project administration
Mode of Work
Offline / In-person
Location: Bengaluru, Karnataka
Salary / Remuneration
- Monthly remuneration ranging between ₹50,000 and ₹80,000
- Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience
