Flash floods were reported in parts of Singapore on Tuesday morning (August 24, 2021) as heavy rain fell across the island. Widespread heavy rain in the early morning on Friday led to flooding at Pasir Ris Drive 12, which made traffic impassable for a moment. National water agency PUB in its recent Facebook post said that there was a “prolonged heavy rain” over many areas.
It also issued flood risk warnings for several locations, including the Upper Bukit Timah area, Woodlands and Sunset Drive. Various photos and videos which are circulating on social media show a flooded Dunearn Road, from Sime Darby to Binjai Park. The flash flood occurred at about 10:10 a.m., said PUB in its recent Facebook post, adding that traffic was not passable due to the floodwaters.
The agency said its quick response teams were on standby at the location to close off a portion of the road and help divert traffic. The flash flood subsided at 10:50 a.m. The lowest temperature recorded as of noon on Tuesday was 21.3°C, taken at the Newton Road area. For the last two weeks, Singapore is having strong rainy weather due to the convergence of winds.
According to PUB, the heaviest rainfall was recorded in western Singapore, was 159.8mm at Bukit Panjang Road rainfall station from 7:50 a.m. to 10:40 a.m. It also said that this corresponds to 109 per cent of Singapore’s average monthly rainfall in August, and lies within the top 0.5 per cent of maximum daily rainfall records since 1981.
Each year, various parts of Singapore are inundated by a series of floods, usually in the form of flash floods that come about due to intense rainfall over a short period of time. People have expressed many times about their problems and frustrations which they had to face every year. Few people have died also since many years because of floods. On Friday too at least 13 vehicles were partially submerged in water at one of the junction. PUB is also investigating the cause of it.
